The Standard 11 (S11) is the mandatory mining induction required for anyone working on surface coal and metalliferous mine sites. Established under the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 and the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation 2017, the Standard 11 ensures all mine workers hold the essential safety knowledge and practical competencies needed to operate safely on site.
The Recognised Standard 11 is issued by Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) and outlines six nationally recognised units of competency that every surface mine worker must complete. Whether you're entering the mining industry for the first time or returning after a break, holding a current Standard 11 is a legal requirement before you can set foot on a surface mine site.
Core Crew Training (RTO 45671) delivers the Standard 11 Surface mining induction 100% online so you can complete your training from anywhere, on your own schedule, without travelling to a training centre or taking time off work.
The full course is $600, with Klarna available. Complete it online, then get certified the same day as your trainer session (held 3 times a week).

Who is the Surface Standard 11 course for?

New starters in the mining industry: If you've never worked on a mine site before, the Standard 11 Surface is your first step. No prior experience or qualifications are needed to enrol in the full course. This is where your mining career starts.
Career changers: Whether you're coming from construction, transport, agriculture, or another industry, the Standard 11 gives you the baseline safety certification to transition into mining roles across Queensland.
FIFO and remote workers: Our 100% online delivery means you don't need to travel to a training centre or take unpaid leave. Complete your Standard 11 between rosters, from home, or from wherever you're based.
Workers needing their 5-year refresher: Under Section 84(1) of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation 2017, all coal mine workers must complete refresher training at least once every five years. Our online refresher is designed for experienced workers who already hold a current or recently expired Statement of Attainment and need to renew without disrupting their roster.
Employers and site operators: If you need to onboard new workers quickly without pulling them off site for multi-day classroom courses, our online Standard 11 lets your team complete their induction on their own time and get certified the same day.

What else Do You need before Starting on a Mine Site?
Your Standard 11 is one piece of the puzzle. Before your first day on a Queensland mine site, you'll also need:
Coal board medical (pre-employment health assessment) — A mandatory health screening that confirms you're fit to work in mining. It typically includes a physical exam, hearing and lung function tests, drug and alcohol screening, and a musculoskeletal assessment. Book this through an approved medical provider, most towns near mining regions have clinics that offer them.
Unique Student Identifier (USI) — Required for all nationally recognised training. If you don't have one, apply free at usi.gov.au.
Photo ID — A current driver's licence or equivalent.
Our tip: Book your coal board medical at the same time as starting your S11. The Standard 11 can be completed online in as little as one day, and most coal board medicals take a couple of hours, so you could have both sorted within the same week and be ready to start work.
