Advanced Diploma of Surface Coal Mining Management

A nationally recognised qualification designed to help Site Senior Executives meet their RS22 obligations and build the leadership capability their operations actually need.

Meeting your RS22 obligations isn't optional

Recognised Standard 22 requires Site Senior Executives to develop a Management Structure for their mine's Safety and Health Management System - and to define and document the competency requirements of every position delegated responsibility under that SHMS.

For surface operations, the AQF Level 6 benchmark means that many senior, supervisory, and statutory positions need a pathway to the Advanced Diploma or equivalent demonstrated competency. Without it, your management structure won't withstand scrutiny from the Inspectorate.

A targeted qualification — not a generic management course

The RII60720 is built around our fast-track training plan, meaning units are selected to map directly to your site's SHMS responsibilities. We work with your SSE and training manager to identify competency gaps, select the right elective combination, and sequence delivery around your operational calendar.

Core units address risk management, safety leadership, legal obligations, and critical control management. Electives can be tailored to reflect your site's specific hazard profile - from surface blast management to environmental compliance and contractor supervision.

What your operation gets

  • A defensible, documented competency framework that satisfies RS22 Management Structure requirements

  • Senior and supervisory staff with nationally recognised AQF Level 6 qualifications aligned to their actual SHMS responsibilities

  • Improved critical control management capability across your management structure

  • A qualification pathway that supports succession planning and internal career development

  • Ongoing RPL assessment for experienced candidates - recognising what your people already know
