How does the online G189 course work?
The G189 is delivered through an online learning platform (LMS) where you work through the course material and complete assessments at your own pace. There's no fixed schedule — you log in when it suits you, whether that's after shift, on days off, or during a swing break.
The course covers three nationally recognised units of competency:
RIIRIS301E — Apply risk management processes
RIIWHS301E — Conduct safety and health investigations
RIICOM301E — Communicate information
The course also includes practical assessment activities involving role-play scenarios. You'll need to source three volunteers, ideally workplace colleagues with experience in the mining or quarrying industry, and video record the practical tasks for assessment. It sounds like a lot, but most people find it straightforward once they get started. Once everything is submitted and assessed, your Statement of Attainment is issued.

How long does the G189 take online?
It depends on how much time you can dedicate to it. Some people knock it out in a few focused days. Others spread it across a week or two, fitting study around their roster.

Is the online G189 the same qualification as the face-to-face version?
Yes, exactly the same. Whether you do it online or in a classroom, you receive the same Statement of Attainment for the same three units of competency under the Australian Qualifications Framework. It's nationally recognised and accepted at every coal and metalliferous mine site in Queensland.
The only difference is how the training is delivered. The units, the assessment requirements, and the qualification you receive at the end are identical.
If you see the G189 referred to as the S123, S1 S2 S3, or G1 G8 G9 - they're all the same qualification. Different names from different eras, same three units, same outcome.
Who needs the G189 Qualification?
Anyone appointed to supervise or direct workers on a Queensland mine site needs this qualification. That includes:
Supervisors and leading hands at coal and metalliferous mines
Open cut and underground supervisors
Anyone stepping up from an operator role into a supervisory position
Contract supervisors working across multiple sites
If you're already working on site and your employer has flagged a supervisor role, the G189 is likely the first thing they'll ask you to get. It's also increasingly common for experienced operators to complete it proactively. Having the qualification on your resume makes you the obvious choice when a supervisor position opens up.
Do I need any experience or prerequisites?
You need to be at least 18 years old and have Year 10 level literacy and numeracy skills. You'll also need a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI). If you don't have one, you can apply free at usi.gov.au. You’ll need a clear copy of your driver's licence or photo ID, and access to a device with an internet connection. There's no formal requirement for prior mining experience, though the course content assumes you have a basic understanding of mine site operations.
In practice, most people doing the G189 already have a few years on site and hold a current Standard 11. If you're brand new to mining and don't have your Standard 11 yet, start there. The G189 is the next step up, not the entry point.
Can I use RPL to fast-track it?
If you've been supervising on site for years and already have the skills and knowledge covered in the G189 units, you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognition of Current Competency (RCC). This means your existing experience is assessed against the unit requirements, and if you meet them, you can receive the qualification without completing the full course.
