G189, S123 - What’s the difference?
Nothing, they're all the same qualification. The course was originally known as the S1 S2 S3 (or S123), named after the three unit codes. When the unit codes were updated under the national training package, it became the G1 G8 G9 (G189). If you see a job ad asking for any of these, they're all asking for the same three supervisor competencies.
Who is the G189 Mining Supervisor course for?
The G189 is designed for experienced mining professionals ready to step into or formalise supervisory roles:
Experienced mine workers moving into supervision: If you're being promoted from an operator, driller, or trade role into a supervisory position, the G189 is the qualification your employer will require before you can officially take on the role. This is your pathway from the crew to the front.
Current supervisors without formal qualifications: If you've been supervising on site based on experience but don't hold the formal G189 competencies, this course gets you qualified. Under Queensland mining legislation, supervisors at mines with more than 10 workers must hold these competencies.
Site Safety and Health Representatives (SSHRs): If you're appointed as the safety and health representative at your mine site, the G189 is a formal requirement for the role.
Shift bosses and site supervisors: Anyone formally tasked with overseeing crew operations, managing site hazards, and ensuring team compliance at a Queensland mine site needs the G189.
Workers in civil and construction: While the G189 originates in mining, the three units of competency are recognised and valued in the broader civil and construction sectors. Some civil employers require or prefer the G189 for site.

If you're completely new to mining, you'd typically complete your Standard 11 induction and gain operational experience before pursuing the G189.

How to identify, assess, and manage risks at a supervisory level. You'll learn to conduct risk assessments, develop and implement risk controls, and monitor their effectiveness. As a supervisor, risk management is your core responsibility — this unit gives you the framework to do it systematically and in line with Queensland mining legislation.
RIIWHS301E — Conduct safety and health investigations (G8 / S2)
How to investigate workplace incidents, near misses, and safety events. You'll learn to gather and preserve evidence, interview witnesses, identify root causes, develop corrective actions, and write investigation reports. These skills help prevent repeat incidents and demonstrate regulatory compliance.
RIICOM301E — Communicate information (G9 / S3)
How to communicate effectively with your team, management, and external stakeholders. You'll learn to deliver pre-start briefings, conduct toolbox talks, document and report information accurately, and manage communication in high-pressure or emergency situations.
