What is a Standard 11 Mining Induction?

WHAT IS the STANDARD 11?

The Standard 11, also called the S11 or Generic Induction, is a safety course that every mine worker in Queensland must complete. No Standard 11, no site access. It's that simple.

Think of it as the mining industry's safety induction. It teaches you the basics: how to spot hazards, manage risks, communicate safely, respond to emergencies, and follow site rules. Every mine site in Queensland requires it, no matter what job you're doing.

The Standard 11 is set by the Queensland Government through Recognised Standard 11 — Training in Coal Mines, issued by Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) under the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999. It's a legal requirement, not just a certification that is nice to have.

WHAT does the standard 11 course cover?

The course is made up of six units. These are the same no matter which training provider you go with:

RIIWHS201E — Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures. The basics of workplace health and safety on a mine site. Your rights, your responsibilities, and how to follow the safety rules.

RIIERR205D — Apply initial response first aid. How to help someone who's been hurt on site. Assessing the situation, providing basic first aid, and calling for backup.

RIIGOV201E — Comply with site work processes and procedures. How a mine site runs day to day — the paperwork, the procedures, and the systems you need to follow.

RIIRIS201E — Conduct local risk control. How to look at your work area, spot what could go wrong, and do something about it before it does.

RIICOM201E — Communicate in the workplace. How to talk to your crew, your supervisor, and other people on site — including using two-way radios. Clear communication keeps everyone safe.

RIIERR302E — Respond to local emergencies and incidents. What to do when things go wrong. How to recognise an emergency, follow the site's emergency plan, and keep yourself and others safe.

When you pass all six units, you get a Statement of Attainment — that's your official proof that you've completed the Standard 11 and are qualified to work on Queensland mine sites.

Standard 11 Surface vs Underground — what's the difference?

There are two different types of Standard 11. Surface and Underground.

The Standard 11 Surface covers the six units listed above. It qualifies you to work on surface mines — open-cut operations and above-ground mining. This is the one most people need, as most mining jobs in Queensland are on the surface.

The Standard 11 Underground adds one extra unit — RIIERR203E: Escape from hazardous situations unaided. Working underground comes with extra risks like gas, roof collapse, and limited escape routes, so you need extra training to deal with those situations.

Only planning on working on the surface? The Standard 11 Surface is all you need. If you plan on working underground, you’ll need the underground ceritfication.

Who needs a Standard 11?

Pretty much anyone who wants to work on a Queensland mine site:

Never worked in mining before? The Standard 11 is your starting point. No prior experience needed — the course is designed for complete beginners.

Been out of mining for a while? If your Standard 11 has expired (it lasts five years) or you've been away from the industry, you'll need to do the full course again.

Due for a refresher? All mine workers must refresh their Standard 11 at least every five years under Queensland law. Many mine sites want it done every two to three years — check with your employer.

Moving from another state? The Standard 11 is a Queensland thing. If you've been working in WA, NSW, or elsewhere, your existing inductions probably won't count here. You'll need to do the Standard 11 before you can start on a QLD site.

Contractors and suppliers? If you need to step onto a mine site for any reason — even if you're not a miner — you need a current Standard 11.

how long does the standard 11 take?

It depends on how you do it:

How do I choose a training provider?

Not all training providers are equal. Here's what to look for:

Make sure they're a registered RTO. Your Standard 11 has to come from a Registered Training Organisation. If it doesn't, your qualification won't be accepted on site. You can check any provider's registration at training.gov.au

Pick a delivery method that works for you. Want to do it from home? Look for an online course. Prefer a classroom? Find a provider near you. Already on a roster? Online is usually the easiest way to fit it in without missing shifts.

Check what's included in the price. Don't just compare the headline number. Make sure the price covers everything — assessments, your Statement of Attainment, and any practical components.

Look for trainers with real mining experience. The best training comes from people who've actually worked on mine sites, not just people who've read the textbook.

Read reviews. Check Google reviews and ask around. If other mine workers rate the provider, that's a good sign.

How often do i need to refresh my standard 11?

The law says at least every five (5) years, but most employers want it done more often. For example:

• BMA sites usually require refreshers every two (2) years

• Other major operators often require them every two (2) to three (3) years

Always check with your employer or the mine site you'll be working on. If your Standard 11 has expired, you won't be allowed on site until you've done a refresher.

Is the Standard 11 the same as a Coal Board Medical?

No, they're two separate things, but you need both to work on a Queensland coal mine.

The Standard 11 is your safety training. It proves you know how to work safely on a mine site.

The Coal Board Medical is a health check done by an approved doctor. It proves you're physically fit for the job.

You can do them in either order, but you'll need both before your first day on site.

Can i do my Standard 11 Online?

Yes if you are getting your Surface Standard 11, however the underground Standard 11 requires an in-person component.
