Can you Do Your Standard 11 Online?
Short answer: Yes - if it's the Surface Standard 11. You can complete the full Standard 11 Surface mining induction entirely online - no classroom, no travel, no fixed schedule.
The Underground Standard 11 still requires an in-person practical component, so that one can't be done fully online. Here's how the online Standard 11 Surface works, who it's suited for, and what to look out for when choosing an online provider.
Can you do the full Standard 11 online or just the refresher?
Both. Some Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), including Core Crew Training, offer the full Standard 11 Surface course 100% online. You don't need to attend a training centre or complete any face-to-face component.
The refresher course is also available fully online. If you already hold a Standard 11 that's due for renewal (every five years under Queensland law, or every two to three years depending on your employer), you can complete your refresher from home or on site without missing a shift.
Some providers only offer the refresher online and require the full course to be done face-to-face or blended (online theory plus a day of practical training). So if you specifically want to do the full course online, check with the provider before you enrol.
Is the online Standard 11 accepted on mine sites?
Yes. The online Standard 11 covers the same six nationally recognised units of competency as the face-to-face course:
RIIWHS201E — Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures
RIIERR205D — Apply initial response first aid
RIIGOV201E — Comply with site work processes and procedures
RIIRIS201E — Conduct local risk control
RIICOM201E — Communicate in the workplace
RIIERR302E — Respond to local emergencies and incidents
When you complete the course, you receive the same Statement of Attainment under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as someone who did it in a classroom. There's no difference on paper — your qualification doesn't say "online" or "face-to-face." It just lists the units you've completed and the RTO that issued them.
That said, some specific mine sites or employers may have their own preferences or additional induction requirements on top of the Standard 11. BMA sites, for example, have a separate BMA Core Induction. It's always worth checking with your employer or the site you'll be working on to make sure you've got everything they need.
How does the online Standard 11 course work?
The process is straightforward. Here's how it works with Core Crew Training:
Step 1 — Enrol and get instant access. Once you pay, you'll get an email with an enrolment link for our online learning platform. No waiting for a course start date — you can start straight away.
Step 2 — Work through the course at your own pace. The course covers all six units through a mix of written content, workplace scenarios, and assessment tasks including quizzes and short-answer questions. You can pause and come back whenever you want. There's no timer and no requirement to finish in one sitting. Most people complete the full course in two to five days, but you can take longer if you need to.
Step 3 — Get certified the same day. Once you've finished all the modules and passed your assessments, your Statement of Attainment is issued by one of our trainers. No waiting weeks for paperwork.
You're not on your own during the course either. Our trainers are experienced mining industry professionals and are available to help if you get stuck or have questions about the material.
How long does the Standard 11 take to complete online?
It depends on you. The course is entirely self-paced, so there's no fixed timeframe.
Most people complete the full Standard 11 Surface in two to five days. Some get through it faster, some take a bit longer — it depends on how much time you can put in each day and whether you have any prior knowledge of the material.
The refresher is shorter since you've already been through the content before. Most people finish it in a few hours to one day.
The key advantage of online is that you can fit it around everything else. Do a couple of modules before work, a couple more in the evening, and finish up on the weekend. There's no pressure to sit in a classroom for eight hours straight.
What do I need to complete the Standard 11 online?
Not much:
A computer, laptop, or tablet. The course works best on a larger screen. You can access it on a phone in a pinch, but some of the assessments are easier on a bigger device.
A reliable internet connection. You'll be working through online modules, so you need to stay connected.
Valid photo ID. A driver's licence or passport for identity verification.
A Unique Student Identifier (USI). This is required for all nationally recognised training in Australia. If you don't have one, you can apply for free at usi.gov.au — it takes a few minutes.
For the refresher course, you'll also need a supervisor who can complete and sign off on a third-party verification report confirming your ongoing site experience. Make sure you have someone lined up before you enrol.
Online vs face-to-face — which is better?
Neither is "better" — they result in the exact same qualification. It comes down to what works for your situation.
Online is ideal if you:
Are already working on a roster and can't take time off for a classroom course
Live in a regional area without a training centre nearby
Want to study at your own pace without being locked into a fixed schedule
Prefer to save on travel and accommodation costs
Need your certification quickly and don't want to wait for the next available classroom date
Face-to-face might suit you better if you:
Prefer learning in a classroom with a trainer in front of you
Want hands-on practical experience as part of the course
Learn better in a structured environment with a set timetable
Some providers also offer a blended option — online theory followed by one day of practical training at a centre. This gives you the flexibility of online learning with a hands-on component at the end.
How much does the Standard 11 cost online?
Prices vary between providers, but you're generally looking at $600 to $700 for the full course and $400 to $450 for the refresher.
At Core Crew Training:
Full Standard 11 Surface course: $600
Standard 11 Surface refresher: $400
Payment options: Afterpay and Klarna available
No hidden fees — the price covers your course access, assessments, trainer support, and Statement of Attainment.
How do I choose an online Standard 11 provider?
There are a few things worth checking before you hand over your money:
Are they a registered RTO? Your Standard 11 must be issued by a Registered Training Organisation registered with the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA). You can verify any provider at training.gov.au. If they're not a registered RTO, your qualification won't be legitimate and won't be accepted on site.
Is the full course actually 100% online? Some providers advertise "online" but actually require you to attend a practical day at a training centre. If you want a fully online experience with no face-to-face component, confirm this before enrolling.
Is trainer support included? A good online course doesn't leave you on your own. Look for a provider that gives you access to qualified trainers who can answer your questions and support you through the course.
How quickly is the Statement of Attainment issued? Some providers take days or even weeks to issue your certification after you complete the course. Look for same-day or next-day issuance so you're not waiting around.
What do the reviews say? Check Google reviews and ask around. Other mine workers who've done the course online are your best source of honest feedback.
Can I do the Standard 11 Underground online?
The Standard 11 Underground includes an additional seventh unit — RIIERR203E: Escape from hazardous situations unaided — which covers emergency evacuation in underground mining environments. This unit requires an in-person practical component (including CABA simulation and underground escape scenarios) that can't be done online. You need to physically demonstrate that you can escape from a hazardous situation unaided, and that has to be assessed face-to-face.
The Standard 11 Surface is the one that can be completed fully online with no in-person requirement.
